Trailhead - Donna Shomer

God doesn’t come to us.
We have to find the trailhead
within us, we have to climb up
to the beauty. But
Paradise is not an easy gift
It’s like getting a pony for your birthday –
You pray for a long time
You ready your heart but then
After the initial excitement
You have to feed her and curry her
And muck out her stalls.

  1. You totally got me with this one! When it started, I thought, oh well, all of this is too heady. But then you perfectly brought me down to earth with that last line. This is just a terrific joke to play on the reader. I love when a poem messes with our expectations!
