The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake - Elizabeth Weld Nolan

Perhaps it’s taste of lemon that brings
a hint of loss, the tart, acid juice
that wrinkles the face and puckers
the mouth. Or maybe it’s sugar
blurring the clean, sharp perspective,
making it acceptable like a wife
hushing the ranting husband
before he has his say.
Or the other way around.

  1. So nice to be reading you again! I love 'a hint of loss,' and I love the way you compare the effect of sugar to the hushing. Just lovely. btw, I also loved your Mint Condition piece.
